Over time I've come to using Red Maple and Claro Walnut almost exclusively for my mandolin backs and sides. It turns out that the specific gravity ranges for these two woods is very similar: Red Maple between .49 and .61 and Claro Walnut between .51 and .64. I've always felt that the walnut yielded a warmer and mellower tone but these numbers aren't saying that!
